The underprivileged women in slums often have little exposure to health education. Even at the time of giving birth many are unaware of the services offered. Therefore we have a team of Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM) and Community Health Volunteers (CHV) to provide home visits to impart health education and improve accessibility to maternity services delivered by trained staff. A team of 11 ANMs, and 17 CHVs, serves the entire population of 24 blocks in Sunder Nagri. They aim to visit each house in their assigned block every three months or if a need is identified or a request is made.

The training of the ANMs:

The ANMs are trained in community nursing, health education, maternal health and childcare. They are trained B Grade Nurses.

The role of the ANMs:

• Daily visit to the area and collection of information about death, birth, marriage, divorce, left area, new family etc.
• All collected information is then reported back to the ANMs who then update family records.
• ANM’s in each visit cover 20-22 houses, covering a population of 6000/year.

• Antenatal Care
• Postnatal Care and monitoring of newborn
• Immunization 0-5 year old
• Growth and malnutrition monitoring
• Distribution of Iron tablets
• Family Planning Methods
• Identification and referral of patients
• Health Education
• Information to community centre on health, education and development groups or programmes
